The Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is actually a juniper native to eastern North America. Since the seventeenth century, it has made its way to Europe, where it is hardy. The typical average height averages about 70 feet, with diameters of up 3 feet not uncommon. All parts of the tree are poisonous; the oil extracted from the tree contains cedrol.
The wood is durable, somewhat heavy, and dense. It is easily worked, both by machine and manually, and carved. It has a very pleasant smell, but not everyone will like it: it is frequently used to line closets to keep away moths. In addition to its use as a moth repellent, the wood is also used for pencils, blocks for making recorders, and humidors. It is even to make bows.
