Makoré (Tiegemella heckelii; also called Baku) is a deciduous tree that can grow up to more than 50m high with a trunk diameter of up to two metres. It is found in the Ivory Coast, Guinea, Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria. While the sapwood is rather light reddish, the heartwood has a mahogany to reddish brown colour.
The wood
is moderately hard, elastic and uniformly dense. As soon as the heartwood is dry, a high resistance to fungi and insects is found. If left untreated, exposure to the elements can lead to brownish-grey discolouration. Makoré is often used in furniture making, but also for stairs and frame constructions.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
