The eucalypts (Eucalyptus; also blue gum tree) are mostly tall, evergreen trees and shrubs that belong to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). There are over 600 species, which are mainly native to Australia and Indonesia. The largest specimen was discovered in Tasmania - with an impressive height of almost 100 m and a trunk girth of over 12 m. Due to the fast growth and the good quality of the wood, eucalypts are also cultivated in other regions of the world.

A reddish colouring of the wood occurs in all species. Only 15 species are actually used commercially. The most important three species are the Red Eucalyptus (Red Gum, hard wood, resistant to parasites), the Eucalpytus grandis (Flooded Gum, less hard, used e.g. for furniture) as well as the Blue Eucalyptus (Blue Gum, not resistant to termites and fungi as well as difficult to process).

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
