The hawthorn (Crataegus) is a member of the genus of shrubs or small trees of maloideae (Pyrinae) within the rose family (Rosaceae). Altogether there are 200 to 300 species found in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere. Europe has about 22 species, three of which are native to Germany. The differences can usually only be distinguished by specialists. It is quite difficult to determine the species because the species freely hybridize with each other.
The wood is very hard and dense, but due to its very small diameter, it is only for smaller carving or turning projects. It has often been used to make handles for forging tools.
