Common Fig (Ficus carica)

The common fig (Ficus carica) is a medium-sized shrub or tree and is particularly at home in the entire Mediterranean basin and Southwest Asia. It has very likely been cultivated for its fruit long before the emergence of sedentary agriculture, making the fig one of the world’s oldest domesticated plants. Large fig tree orchards can be found in Turkey, Greece, southern Italy, and Spain, growing the fig known to consumers around the world in either its fresh or dried form.
Fig wood is medium hard and moderately heavy and has traditionally been most commonly used for all sorts of carving projects. In the 13th and 14th century, it also gained favor as the preferred material wood for panels to paint on.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
