European boxwood (Buxus sempervirens)The European boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) is a slow-growing shrub or tree that does not grow very large. It is usually between 3 and 30 feet tall, with a trunk only 3-4 inches across, occasionally up to 8 inches. The boxwood is often planted as an ornamental plant in parks, usually condemned by regular pruning to a specific shape. It is also frequently used as a common garden hedge, a role it performs well enough.
The wood is usually pale yellow, although occasionally there are pieces grained with green/blue accents. It is particularly hard and dense and is the hardest native wood. It is particularly in instrument making and intricate turning.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
