Pau ferro or morado (Machaerium scleroxylon) has also been called Santos or Bolivian rosewood, but it’s not a member of the rosewood family. Pau ferro is native to the tropics of South America, especially southern Brazil.
The wood is hard and dense. It has replaced the jacarandá (Brazilian rosewood), which is no longer commercially available, and is used in many places to make furniture.
