Pink ivory (Rhamnus zeyheri) comes from southern Africa (Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe). It is an evergreen to semi-evergreen broadleaf tree that can reach a height of 50 feet. The tree forms tasty fruits for humans and animals that can be eaten fresh or dried. Pink Ivory has also been called the wood of Zulu royalty, giving an indication of its rarity and justifying its high price.
The pink wood is very hard, dense, and heavy, and is wonderful to work with.
