The European boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) is a slow-growing shrub or tree that does not grow very large. It is usually between 3 and 30 feet tall, with a trunk only 3-4 inches across, occasionally up to 8 inches. The boxwood is often planted as an ornamental plant in parks, usually condemned by regular pruning to a specific shape. It is also frequently used as a common garden hedge, a role it performs well enough.
The wood is usually pale yellow, although occasionally there are pieces grained with green/blue accents. It is particularly hard and dense and is the hardest native wood. It is particularly in instrument making and intricate turning.
