The grass tree (Xanthorrhoea) has 28 subspecies and only grows in Australia. Grass trees often grow as the understory in eucalyptus forests. Their specific properties helps them not only to survive bush fires, but are even necessary for their propagation.
The wood is moderately dense, heavy, and hard. It is rather brittle, but can be ground quite well. It has a very interesting grain somewhat reminiscent of scales with a color ranging from light to dark brown. The wood does darken significantly over time.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
