Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) ©WillowThe common alder (Alnus glutinosa) is a medium-sized deciduous tree native throughout Europe. It reaches heights of 100 feet with a trunk diameter of up to three feet. In rare cases, it can even reach 130 feet. The alder has played an important role in the religions of some cultures, It was worshiped by the Celts and it was well-known to the Greeks, playing a role in Homer’s Odyssey. The alder has its spot in folk customs, where alder branches were hung to protect against witches and where grain would be poured through alder wreaths to protect the seeds from birds.
The wood is medium-hard, but the burl is rather rare and therefore highly sought after. The heartwood and sapwood have the same color. Despite its lightness, it works well for use in underwater structures, such pylons on docks and piers.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
