Sea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) ©Jürgen HowaldtSea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) ranges from 3 to 20 feet tall. While its true origin is in Nepal, the sea-buckthorn can be found across East and West Asia, but also in central and northern Europe. Due to its strong root system, it is quite dominant and can displaces neighboring plants. The timber contains the dye quercetin, while the berries contain an extremely high dose of vitamin C. They are used in such things as juice, wine, liquor, tea, and jam . Because of the difficult harvesting conditions, sea-buckthorn is quite expensive as a raw material.
The wood is medium hard and durable. It polishes very nicely and is mainly used by turners.

Finely grained wood may contain imperfections such as open knots, bark inclusions, or cracks that are typical of the species. These flaws come from the way the tree has grown and are completely natural. They can usually be filled with low-viscosity cyanoacrylate (super glue) and wood dust.
